Regensburg - "old and new at the same time" - Between the Old Town and the Marina Quarter

Regensburg in the 21st century: That is much more than just the old town. To the east of it, for example, lies the former abattoir district, which has mutated into the "Marina Quartier" - modern structural change in exemplary form. And the path from the "Marina Quartier" along the Danube to the city center tells the story of the last two hundred years of urban development. Here you pass from the old slaughterhouse, which became a conference center, to landing stages where Danube steamboats were replaced by modern cruise ships, and a former parking lot where a highly attractive museum has been built, to one of Regensburg's landmarks, the rebuilt Stone Bridge.

From Slaughterhouse to Marina Quarter - A Former Industrial Area in Transition

The construction of the municipal slaughterhouse on the eastern outskirts of Regensburg in 1888 marked the beginning of industrialization in the so-called Gründerzeit period. Shortly afterwards, the Luitpoldhafen port and the sugar factory were built. Today, these uses have largely become obsolete, and the buildings and associated land have been abandoned for years. Recently, the city of Regensburg, together with investors, has developed new structures appropriate for the 21st century. Existing buildings, some of which are listed as historic monuments, have been repurposed and supplemented with new ones. The old slaughterhouse district has been transformed into a residential and service district close to the city center – the Marina Quartier. It is a prime example of the modern structural change that is taking place in many cities. Regensburg Tourismus GmbH plays an important role in this, operating the Marinaforum, an event center for conferences, congresses, seminars, concerts, and festivals, thus giving the new district a beating heart.

A city through the ages - A historic city becomes modern

Regensburg's old town - apart from the fact that it captivates visitors with its special flair - provides them with a perfectly suited textbook and sample book of the entire history of European art and architecture. In a very small space, you will find outstanding, high-quality and largely originally preserved examples of all the important styles: from Romanesque and Gothic to Renaissance and Baroque to Classicism and Historicism. Individual characteristic building types can also be studied; they are embodied by churches, public buildings and private houses. The construction methods and techniques of different periods can be studied in direct comparison - but not only that. For architecture is always also an interpretation and explanation of the world and bears witness to how people thought and felt. This creates a picture of the zeitgeist of the past. Regensburg is representative of European architectural history - an important argument for the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“Have you seen anything like this?” - Small monuments on Regensburg houses

Every child knows the cathedral, the town hall and the Stone Bridge; they have made the city famous. But there is still much more to discover. All you have to do is stroll through the alleyways of the old town with your eyes wide open and you will immediately find what you are looking for. You will come across numerous coats of arms on house facades, gravestones, stone statues and much more - all things whose history and significance have often been forgotten. Yet these little things sometimes tell you much more about times gone by than the big highlights.
