Three Religions - One City

Christianity, Judaism, Islam: three world religions have left their traces in Regensburg, two of them for more than a thousand years, one only more recently. On a walk in the old town, we will show you how people practice their faith and live together in a city - in the past as well as in the present. We'll tell you about differences and some surprising similarities, and show you the amazing variety of religious places. In some of them - those you have probably never seen before - even doors that otherwise remain closed will open.

A House for Eternity - Regensburg's Jewish Cemetery

At the beginning of the 19th century, long after the expulsion of 1519, a "proper" Jewish community had re-established itself in Regensburg. They acquired a plot of land near today's city park in order to establish their own cemetery there. As a "house for eternity", the cemetery has a special significance in Jewish tradition. In the cemetery near the city park there are simple gravestones, but also those of high cultural-historical value; they keep alive the memory of many a famous name. In addition, the cemetery as a whole is a very special place of silence in the middle of a busy residential area. The atmosphere that surrounds you there alone is worth the visit. .

"Zachor - Remember!" - The Jewish Regensburg

Since the early Middle Ages, Jews were also resident in Regensburg, then a major and cosmopolitan city, and actively participated in the economic growth of the city. At times, one of the largest and most important Jewish communities in all of Germany existed here. The Jewish quarter was located in the middle of the city - but it was completely destroyed after the expulsion of the Jews in 1519; today the Neupfarrplatz is located there. Excavations in the 1990s brought to light a wealth of well-preserved structural remains underground; part of these, impressively presented, can be seen in the "document Neupfarrplatz". But Jewish Regensburg has also remained alive in many other places to this day... A special accent is set by the newly built synagogue (only from the outside), which was opened in 2019.

Bone dry - the tombs of European envoys

Baroque was an era of lavish representation. This was even evident in the design of funerary monuments. The wealthy could afford stone works of art for eternity. For centuries, imperial diets were held in Regensburg, including the Perpetual Diet from 1663 to 1803. Envoys and their families came to Regensburg from all over Europe. Those who died here usually had to be buried on site, naturally strictly separated according to denomination. The Protestant representatives and their families were buried in the churchyard around the Church of the Holy Trinity. This is how the envoys' cemetery, the only surviving diplomatic cemetery, came into being. It shows how art and death were dealt with, as do the funerary monuments of the Catholic envoys who found their final resting place in the Imperial Abbey of St. Emmeram.
Are the monuments comparable in terms of their design, message and furnishings beyond the differences of faith? Join us on a walk to the graves of the European envoys and discover evidence of faith and representation at and in the churches.
