Castles and palaces

Numerous medieval castles and castle ruins tower high above the river valleys of the Schwarzer Laber, Naab, Regen and Danube. They whisk visitors away to a bygone era, as do pretty little castles and the imposing baroque monastery complex in Pielenhofen. Wolfsegg Castle, one of the best-preserved fortifications in the Upper Palatinate, is a must-see for castle fans. Inside it houses a museum with life-size replicas of the former inhabitants.

The Valhalla - "Hall of Fame of the Germans" on the Danube

Not far from Regensburg, the Valhalla towers snow-white high above the slopes of the Danube. Its location brings art and nature in perfect harmony - pure romance! Built on an initiative of the Bavarian King Ludwig I by his court architect Leo von Klenze, its exterior follows the model of the famous Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens; inside it presents the busts of great men and women from the German and Germanic past. Valhalla is considered a masterpiece of classicism and is part of the historic cultural landscape on the Danube. Its location was deliberately chosen to provide a visual axis to Regensburg and the cathedral; therefore, its visit is a must for anyone who is interested in the city!
