Regensburg tavern history(s)
Hospitality has an ancient tradition in Regensburg. Even the Romans dined here, were the first to cultivate Regensburg's country wine and incidentally created the word "pub". In the city of the Middle Ages, many streets were named after taverns; exotic names such as "Weiße-Lamm-Gasse" or "Fröhliche-Türken-Strasse" are still reminders of this today. Even the ecclesiastical institutions had a close relationship to physical well-being back then: in Regensburg, everyone knows that you don't necessarily have to be sick to go to the "Spital"! The tradition has endured: To this day, Regensburg's density of pubs is considered legendary far beyond the city limits... Many interesting but also amusing stories are hidden behind the inns, pubs and breweries.

Barley Juice and Vitality - St. Katharinen Hospital and its Brewery
Founded as a foundation by citizens for citizens almost 800 years ago, the St. Katharinen Hospital has maintained its old tradition without interruption to this day. The building complex is still one of the most impressive hospital complexes in Germany. Much can be told about the Infirmerie, the Spitalkircherl and the Pfründnerhäuser and the not always easy relationship with the Bavarian foreign country Stadtamhof. And of course, the oldest hospital and foundation brewery in the world should not be missed. The brewing tradition of the Spital brewery goes back almost 800 years. Originally, the beer was intended to fortify the local sick. Today one knows more the inn with one of the most beautiful beer gardens in Bavaria. At the end of the tour you can taste the best Spital beer...

Statt am Hoff - The Bavarian Gateway to Regensburg
Stadtamhof and Regensburg - since 1924 they have been one city and since 2006 they have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites together. But in former times there were two towns on the two sides of the Danube and the relationship between Regensburg, the Free Imperial City, and the Bavarian Stadtamhof was not easy: two confessions, different calendars, disputes over salt and other trade goods - plenty of occasions for tension and discord. Even today, Regensburg's smallest district is still something special. On our way to romantic corners away from the hustle and bustle of the city center, you will learn many stories, e.g. how a former fishermen's, small craftsmen's and brewer's settlement became an in-district in the last decades, how Stadtamhof became an island or why the coat of arms is a deliberate provocation. Stadtamhof may be small, but the supply of stories remains inexhaustible!

Well-known, famous, infamous
Many old walls in Regensburg's Old Town tell exciting stories about the people who have lived in them over the centuries. Sometimes memorial plaques commemorate them - some you will only learn about on our guided tour: On a special Regensburg "Walk of Fame" we present amusing and delicate, spectacular and sometimes gruesome anecdotes of gallants and scholars, of aristocrats and adventurers, in short: of VIPs from the past and present.

Regensburg Women's Stories
It is an old, but nevertheless fundamentally false cliché: history is written by men - although many things would not have been possible in the past without women! In Regensburg, at any rate, women certainly did not just sit in the quiet chamber. On the contrary: time and again, noblewomen, nuns, patricians and female citizens have influenced the history of the city, sometimes even world history. And they were very versatile: they worked in the charitable, political, economic, artistic and culinary fields in equal measure. A walk, amusing and thought-provoking at the same time, leads to the most important sites.
