20 Years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site – Regensburg’s Old Town and Stadtamhof
Old Town Highlights with Visitor Center
In 2006, Germany’s best-preserved medieval city was awarded the prestigious title of “UNESCO World Heritage Site,” highlighting its “outstanding universal value” for humanity. The fact that the city on the Danube was one of Europe’s most important trading centers from the 11th to the early 15th century and was connected to all corners of the world is still clearly evident in the Old Town today. But in the High Middle Ages, Regensburg was not only a wealthy merchant city but also a political center of Central Europe and, from 1663 to 1806, even the seat of the Perpetual Imperial Diet. The tour combines a walk through the most important sites in the Old Town with a detour to the World Heritage Center.

Past + Present = Future
Anyone who wants to get to know the "Regensburg World Heritage Site" as a whole will need a bit of time. After all, everything has been preserved in the old town with its nearly one thousand architectural monuments from two thousand years: the fortifications of the Romans; the residences of dukes, kings and emperors; houses and towers of wealthy patricians; churches and monasteries of the episcopal city; Protestant houses of worship and institutions; evidence of Judaism; the town hall with the "Perpetual Diet". But the way - partly off the usual sightseeing routes - is worthwhile! It leads to places where it becomes clear how Regensburgers in the present deal with their heritage from the past so that it is preserved for the future.
