Bismarck Square
In the western part of Regenburg's old town is the neoclassically designed square named after the city's honorary citizen, Reich Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. Already in "Castra Regina" times and also later in the Middle Ages, the area located on the outskirts of the city served as a location for warehouses and storehouses.
In the 19th century, Prince-Primate Carl von Dalberg had the two classicist buildings erected that still dominate the square today. In addition, there are also the buildings of the former monastery of St. Jacob, which today houses the seminary, and the building of the former Württemberg legation. At the southern end rises the "Präsidialpalais" as the former seat of the French envoy to the Perpetual Reichstag. This impressive building was the first to integrate the architectural style of classicism in its purest form into the cityscape, which was still influenced by the Middle Ages.
On the north side of Bismarckplatz, directly opposite the Presidential Palace, is the Regensburg Theater. After a serious fire in 1849, the people of Regensburg built the structure that still exists today on the foundation walls. The front side and at the same time entrance area of the stately theater building completes the classicist building ensemble.
