The origin, rise and history of Regensburg are unthinkable without the rivers Danube, Regen and Naab. It was they who helped the city to fame and fortune. First and foremost, the European river - the Danube.
Regensburg, the city on the rivers
The Romans already took advantage of the strategically favorable location 2,000 years ago and laid the foundation stone of the city right here on the Danube. In the Middle Ages, people traveled downstream to distant lands to trade. Long-distance trade brought not only luxury goods to Regensburg, but also wealth and civic pride. Even today, the river plays a major role in the European trade of goods.
The Danube also impresses with breathtaking riverside landscapes such as the spectacular Danube breakthrough at Weltenburg. Imposing structures have been built on its banks and can be visited, for example the Valhalla or the Hall of Liberation in Kelheim. The Danube connects Regensburg with Europe.
You should not miss this:
- A boat trip on the Danube upstream along the waterfront of the historic Old Town or downstream to Walhalla
- A bike tour along the picturesque shoreline
- A trip by boat to Kelheim to the Liberation Hall and then on through the Danube breakthrough to the Weltenburg Monastery
- A walk along the historic riverbank promenade
