document Niedermünster: Romans, Dukes and Saints

A place to experience 2000 years of cultural history: one of the largest archaeological excavation sites in Germany is located under the Romanesque Niedermünster church right next to the cathedral. The unique "document Niedermünster" in the northeast corner of the former Roman legionary camp "Castra Regina" impressively leads with original findings to the most important epochs of Regensburg and Bavarian history.

Through the simultaneous readability of the successive layers, the historical development from the 2nd to the 12th century, from the Roman military camp and the foundations of the World Heritage city of Regensburg to the Palatine Chapel of the Duke of Bavaria and the church of the aristocratic Niedermünster convent, is now presented in current 3D reconstructions and with an innovative lighting concept.

Here the visitor encounters historically important personalities such as the diocesan patron Erhard. In the document Niedermünster, one stands eye-to-eye with the tombs of Duke Heinrich I and his wife Judith, who ruled Bavaria in the middle of the 10th century at the time of its greatest expansion, as well as the tomb of Gisela of Burgundy, mother of Emperor Heinrich II. The visitor moves predominantly in the excavations of the preserved Romanesque church building. The basement impressively conveys the growth of historical layers and buildings to a thickness of five meters.
