Stone Bridge - Wonder of the Middle Ages

For almost 800 years, until 1935, it remained the only bridge that served as a reliable crossing of the Danube in Regensburg and the surrounding area. In stone round arches, the impressive structure spans the river for about 300 meters. The bridge itself stands on sixteen foundation feet on which the barrel vaults of the actual bridge structure rest. As the entrance to the city, the bridge was originally guarded by three towers. Still preserved is the bridge tower on the city side, which offers an excellent view over the city.

On the apex of the Stone Bridge, the Bruckmandl looks in the direction of the cathedral. According to legend, it represents the builder who is checking how high the cathedral towers already rise. He had made a bet with the master builder of the cathedral as to which building would be completed sooner. After the cathedral construction progressed much faster, the bridge builder made a pact with the devil. The devil would stand by him if he got the first three souls that would cross the new bridge...
