Double UNESCO World Heritage Site: Old Town with Stadtamhof and the Danube Limes

Only a few cities worldwide can boast two UNESCO World Heritage titles. Regensburg belongs to this exclusive circle. The city was awarded the first World Heritage title in 2006 for Regensburg's Old Town with Stadtamhof. The second title followed in 2021. The UNESCO World Heritage Site "Frontiers of the Roman Empire" was extended to include the Roman Danube Limes (Wet Limes).

One city, one river - two UNESCO World Heritage titles

Regensburg and Stadtamhof have been UNESCO World Heritage Cities since 2006. More than 1,000 individual monuments come together to form the incredibly dense and sparkling picture of a medieval trading city. Regensburg is the best preserved medieval city in Germany. But that's not all. The strategically important location at the northernmost point of the Danube was also chosen by the Romans as the boundary of their empire. In 2021, UNESCO decided that the Danube Limes, and with it the importance of Roman history in Regensburg, should also be awarded the World Heritage title. Regensburg is proud to have so carefully preserved the evidence of both the Romans and the medieval trading dynasties as a World Heritage Site of Humanity and now to have received this award. Regensburg simply shines twice.

Within the walls of Castra Regina, the Roman legionary camp of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, is today the core of the medieval city. The Porta Praetoria is one of the highlights of any visit to Regensburg and impressively conveys the relationship between the two eras. The relics of the north gate of Castra Regina have been preserved as prominent fixtures in the walls of the bishop's court near St. Peter's Cathedral.
